• They don’t think you’re fit for the job.
Whether it’s because of your personality or expertise, you may be viewed as someone who does not meet the qualifications needed for the job. This is the first thing that can convince employers not to hire you. But not getting hired because of qualification mismatch doesn’t necessarily mean that you suck. Chances are, they just found someone who is a better fit for the team.
• They were not impressed during the interview.
Okay, maybe you really did suck during the interview. You may have lacked preparation and failed to research about the company profile. Sometimes, employers can sugarcoat their reasons for not hiring you when the real reason is just that they weren’t convinced with what you said during the interview.
• They have financial concerns.
There are two reasons of financial nature that can prevent you from getting your desired job. First, you may have asked for a salary that your employer can’t afford to give, even if they see you as a good candidate. Second, somewhere along the recruitment process, the managers may have realized that the company budget can no longer accommodate the expenses needed by the position you are applying for.
• They hired an insider.
It’s common for companies to post a job opening publicly despite having plans of hiring someone from the inside. Sometimes, they just take their chances and see if they can find an exceptionally good candidate from the outside. Hiring an insider poses less risk to the company since the person is already familiar with the work culture and expectations of the company.
• They think you’re overqualified.
Let’s face it, jobseekers can sometimes be more knowledgeable than their interviewers. You may just be too good that the hiring managers may have felt intimidated or insecure, so they decided to look for someone who has the right amount of personality or experience.
• They didn’t let you prove yourself.
It’s possible for hiring managers or employers to be incompetent interviewers too. You may not have had enough opportunity to showcase your qualification for the job. The interview can sometimes be restricted or time-bound that a candidate is not assessed holistically. Also, although this doesn’t happen very often, hiring managers can have biases that can play a part in their decision making.
When seeking for a job, you must always remember that rejection can happen despite investing so much effort. Whether it’s because of another candidate outperforming you or the interviewer being incompetent in selecting the best from the group, you must carry on and use this experience to prepare harder for your next job application.
